The collection here is immense and diverse, and many of the cacti and succulents Merv grows come from areas much cooler and wetter than his Ipswich address, but have proven to be both tough and adaptable. ![]() “They like their roots to spread out, fairly shallow, to collect as much rain as possible when it comes” says Merv. Merv lives to the west of Brisbane, on a step slope at the end of an escarpment, which is a challenging site for most gardeners, but Mervs cacti seem to thrive on the shallow, rocky soils. “They can go without water for six months sometimes, whereas you skip watering for a weekend and a normal plant will drop dead!”. “I just love how tough these plants are” says Merv of his cactus collection. Jerry catches up with Merv Whitehouse, the cactus king, to look at his impressive collection of these beautiful, structural, resilient plants.
